FIGUERES

Figueres is the capital of the Alt Empordà area, in the far north-eastern corner of Catalonia, making it an important communications and logistics centre, a port of entry and stop-off point for travellers and tourists of all kinds.

The city offers a broad range of hotels, apartments, guesthouses and campsites of all kinds. Tapas abound, while also on offer is regional and international cuisine. However, the appeal of Figueres centres on the Dalí Theatre-Museum, which contains a large collection of works by the world famous artist Salvador Dalí, who once lived in the city. Guided tours around Dali’s Figueres’ are available. The city also boasts the national toy museum - El Museu del Joguet de Catalunya, the ample boulevard of La Rambla; the central promenade of the city centre, a nearby pedestrian shopping area which links to the city’s historical centre. Also worth a visit is Sant Ferran Castle, an impressive18th-century military fortification, the Plaça del Gra, the old town slaughterhouse, and the Church of Sant Pere and the old Jewish quarter.
